A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Albany, Australia by TravelPod blogger Mcds4 titled “There’s no place like (someone else’s) home!” Mcds4’s travel blog entry: “”Good bye,” Stirling Ranges, and “Hello,” Albany. This town has so much going for it … decent size (roughly 30000) but not too big ["where urban sophistication and natural beauty combine" ... so there, by golly!]; more history than you can poke a stick at [and some of it not convict for a change ... WOW!]; a stunning position on a huge bay that opens onto a huge sound that opens onto a huge ocean; 39 sunny days a year [and it turned out we used four of them]; and good friends with extremely accommodating personalities [more on that later]. We hit Albany full of excitement and just a little trepidation. We were meeting up with people we’d met on the road. Helen and Brett and their kids and the Travelling McDs had bonded over afternoon ‘tea’ (actually nibbles, beers and wines) and a huge collection of Littlest Pet Shop toys (LPS or ‘vacuum cleaner food’, as Alistair calls it). The kids played together so well, giving their parents that incredibly rare ‘me’ time to revel in, that friendships were forged, addresses were exchanged, promises to meet up made … and now it was time to put it to the test. We’d tentatively booked a site in Albany (just in case) but it turned out that we were being offered the best site in Albany. Our site for the next few days was to be Brett and Helen’s driveway. It …
Hamsters need things to play with, to keep them fit and happy. It’s essential for their health and well-being, and of course watching them can be fun for you too. Especially if you make their toys yourself!
Generally speaking, it’s up to you whether you choose to go the route of buying all their toys, or trying your hand at making them. There are two exceptions: one is the hamster wheel, which compensates for their confinement by allowing them to run as much as they like – and they will really clock up the miles. The fact that they are not getting anywhere doesn’t seem to worry them! Also useful is the hamster ball, which allows them the run of the floor while inside it. Unless you are very clever with crafts, these are two things you’ll need to buy.
Other than that, the choice of whether to buy or make toys really comes down to aesthetics. If you like everything ready-made, stylish and colourful, you’re better off at the pet shop. But beware – there is no guarantee your Hamster will love what you bring home, and if your Multi-Story Hamster Igloo gets ignored, you may find yourself making additional trips. However, if you’re prepared to go DIY for that rough and ready look, you’ll be amazed at the number of ordinary things lying around the house that can be converted into playthings — that will keep Hammy amused for hours!
You don’t even need to be good with your hands. With little adjustment, many common objects, so long as they are not made of toxic materials or retain traces of dangerous chemicals, can become tunnels, hideaways, or fun toys. Many find the simple cardboard tube from a toilet roll ideal.
Some things will work better than others, but the beauty of it is, you can experiment as much as you like. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Hideaway – any small cardboard box, such as a shoe, tissue, or cereal box, with one or more holes cut in the side as necessary. Try a flower pot or tin can on its side -watch for sharp edges. For dwarf hamsters, try an egg carton – you can cut holes along the side, or in the egg compartments for them to pop in and out of.
Climbing frame – cut a small branch from an apple tree or similar and stick it in the cage- he’ll probably love to gnaw it as well.
Tunnels and mazes – cardboard tubes, plastic water bottles (cut ends off carefully) – can be attached together for long tunnels. Or just use rolled up newspaper. You can create mazes by inserting the tubes into holes cut in boxes, connecting one to another.
Shredded paper – Empty your shredder and let your hamster have a romp in the paper strips.
Be safety conscious: always supervise your hamster while it amuses itself in this way. You could unwittingly create hazards that you haven’t foreseen, and you want to be right there if it gets itself into trouble. Apply precautionary common sense- structures should be sturdy enough to withstand the weight of a playful hamster on the go, without collapsing or tearing. Avoid using glue or tape if possible – but if you do, keep to a minimum and watch carefully that Hammy isn’t chewing on it.
Use your imagination – and you could end up envying your hamster as it enjoys its very own amusement park – all made by you!
Computers and video games are fun, but too much of them can never be a good thing. Remember when your own mom used to say, “Why don’t you go out and play?” Well, why don’t you ask your kids the same thing? Today’s children have become so attached to the couch and the TV and gaming consoles have become the only recognizable children’s toys nowadays that going outside to play seems like an entirely alien idea to them.
Benefits of Playing Outdoors for Children
There are several benefits that children gain from playing with wholesome, non-electronic, low-technology toys outside. Here are some of them:
- They get to use their imagination and improve it. The backyard is a whole lot of space for little children and with their little kids’ imaginations, they can transform the entire area into a storybook jungle or the hub of a rocket space ship.
- They get to exercise their little bodies as they play. Obesity in children is a rapidly growing problem in America. Much of this problem is caused by the proliferation of trans-fatty foods combined with the lack of physical activity that children engage in. When kids go outside and play, they walk, run, jump, skip, and move around endlessly, giving them the right amount of exercise they need to battle obesity.
- They learn to socialize with other people. By sharing children’s toys with other children and playing games with them, your children develop the necessary social skills that help them become better adults when they grow up.
- They begin to appreciate Mother Nature. After spending hours playing under the yoke of the Earth, children will learn to better appreciate the beauty and well-being that the planet gives us.
Popular Kinds of Children’s Toys for the Outdoors
Summertime is the best time for playing with toys outdoors, but you should not restrict playtime to during the summers alone. When little kids start to love playing outdoors sincerely, not even the weather can keep them inside. Below are some of the best toys for children that they can play with outside.
- Frisbee. It is a popular sport among kids and adults alike and you get to exercise the body a lot. Some Frisbees are glow-in-the-dark. Others have LED lights installed in them. This makes it a lot more attractive to play with, especially during the night.
- Sandbox. Toddlers and pre-schoolers love to wallow in a 20-pound box full of sand, where they can build castles and dig holes using little plastic trowels and pails. Be sure that the sand in your child’s sandbox is clean and safe.
- A scooter, or anything with wheels. You can get them a toy car or a pair of four-wheel skates. Kids, especially the boys, will love zipping to and fro in these, but be sure they are always supervised.
- A playhouse. This can be a great DIY project for the willing, but there are also playhouse kits available from toy stores. A playhouse can include tunnels, ladders, rock walls, swing sets, and of course, a slide.
